Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but does this fairy tale have a plot which lends itself to opera? Well, Rossini certainly thought it did and thankfully so did the romantic French composer Jules Massenet. When this work was premiered in 1899, Massenet and French Opera were at their peak with serious and comic operas. Both these styles are woven together in this opera with the comic monstrous ambition of the stepmother and stepsisters set against the poignant plight of Cinderella with her hapless father caught between them. The music is pure melody and whilst the orchestration is lush and rich it retains a light impressionistic style of the period. On hearing the writing for the fairy godmother you will suspect that Walt Disney films studied this score very carefully for many of the classic fairy tale cartoons.

Bath Operas superb professional orchestra and much acclaimed large chorus will very ably support a line up of new young soloists as well as some more familiar faces and voices. This production by Alexandra Denman is set in that glamorous era after the First World War when the Arts & Crafts movement, Art Nouveau and Art Deco were all vying to be the new style.
