About the production
Albert Einstein said of Idomeneo that it was "one of those works that even a genius of the highest rank like Mozart could only write once in his life".
It was the last of three operas he wrote in the opera seria style, a convention that was drawing to its close by the time of the first performance. Mozart writes beautiful and noble music for soloists and chorus which draws the audience though the unfolding of a dramatic classical tragedy. One quartet has been described as "the most sublime ensemble ever composed for the stage".
Idomeneo received one performance, on Saturday 5th July 2008, as part of Bath Opera's three night summer season at the Rondo Theatre.
